LYME DISEASE Q & A VIDEO SERIES

Is there research being done on Lyme disease?

ANSWER:

Many of the antibiotics that we have now are the same antibiotics I used when I started my practice 30 years ago. Some of the studies on treatment with antibiotics, though, were disappointing.  When you look into those trials, you find they were enrolling people who were sick for four years, nine years on average. People would fail treatment. People weren’t offered an individualized treatment program. So, sometimes these trial results are used and doctors will say, “Well it didn’t work there.” But in practice, there are so many patients that aren’t sick for nine years, who aren’t failing treatment, who need other treatment protocols. We need more research on people who can benefit from treatment.
