Lyme disease can lead to long-term sequelae

How bad is Lyme disease? As the number of cases continues to rise, a recent review by Mac and colleagues entitled “Long-term sequelae and health-related quality-of-life associated with Lyme disease: A systematic review”¹ finds that Lyme disease can often lead to poor outcomes. This should come as no surprise to the many patients already suffering from chronic illness due to Lyme disease.

Lyme disease case definition misused. Perspective.

A recent article “Evaluating the Potential Misuse of the Lyme Disease Surveillance Case Definition,” by Perea and colleagues [1] highlights a concern that I have raised in previous blog posts. That is, are doctors incorrectly relying on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) surveillance definition when evaluating and diagnosing patients?

Find a Lyme doctor using telemedicine.

It’s easy to find a doctor who will treat Lyme disease patients with a tick bite in an endemic area when they exhibit an erythema migrans rash, 7th nerve palsy, heart block, meningitis, or Lyme arthritis. But, if a person lacks these objective signs, finding a doctor to recognize and treat the disease is not so easy. Now with telemedicine, you may be able to consult with a Lyme doctor, who specializes in tick-borne diseases.

What is “chronic Lyme disease”?

“Chronic Lyme disease has been a poorly defined term and often dismissed as a fictitious entity,” write the authors of “Chronic Lyme Disease: An Evidence-Based Definition by the ILADS Working Group.” Therefore, after conducting an extensive review of published cases, the authors have developed an evidence-based definition of chronic Lyme disease. ¹

4 children infected with Lyme disease in the south from one camp

Some doctors have questioned the existence of Lyme disease in the south, but in their “Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report,” published January 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describe 4 cases of Lyme disease in young children who attended a wilderness day camp in North Carolina.
