{"id":35224,"date":"2023-10-31T18:51:53","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T23:51:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/danielcameronmd.com\/how-effective-is-combination-antibiotic-treatment-for-tick-borne-infections\/"},"modified":"2025-01-13T21:39:27","modified_gmt":"2025-01-14T03:39:27","slug":"how-effective-is-combination-antibiotic-treatment-for-tick-borne-infections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielcameronmd.com\/how-effective-is-combination-antibiotic-treatment-for-tick-borne-infections\/","title":{"rendered":"How effective is combination antibiotic treatment for tick-borne infections?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In their article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-2607\/11\/9\/2152\">\u201cA Longitudinal Study of a Large Clinical Cohort of Patients with Lyme Disease and Tick-Borne Co-Infections Treated with Combination Antibiotics\u201d<\/a> Xi and colleagues looked at 140 individuals who tested positive for tick-borne infections (TBI) with 33% of those patients infected with multiple TBIs.\u00b9<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The authors found that out of the 140 participants:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>93 (66.43%) had positive antibody responses to one tick-borne infection<\/li>\n<li>83 (59.29%) were positive for Borrelia<\/li>\n<li>7 (5.00%) were positive for Rickettsia<\/li>\n<li>1 (0.71%) each for either Babesia, Bartonella, or Ehrlichia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The remaining 47 (33.57%) patients were infected with multiple tick-borne infections, including Borrelia, Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia and Rickettsia.<\/p>\n<h4>The majority of patients were treated with a triple antibiotic combination regimen.<\/h4>\n<p>Most of the participants received 500 mg cefuroxime, 300 mg rifampicin, and 300 mg lymecycline. Treatment duration ranged between 12 and 40 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In the first follow-up visit with 118 patients, 59% reported having pain and 41% had neurological symptoms. Meanwhile, there was continued improvement in patient symptoms at the second follow-up visit.
