If you know ticks are a risk but do not use preventive measures every time you go outside, you are not alone. Many people worry about Lyme disease and understand which precautions are recommended, yet they do not use those precautions consistently.

A 2026 study of residential vector-control practices across New England found a mismatch between concern and action. Although concern about tick-borne disease was high, concern by itself was not associated with using more residential vector-control measures after researchers adjusted for other factors.

The findings suggest that awareness alone may not be enough. Effective Lyme disease prevention may require practical, affordable, and location-specific strategies that are easy to incorporate into everyday life.

Why Doesn’t Concern About Lyme Disease Always Lead to Action?

A person may recognize Lyme disease as an important regional health problem without feeling that a tick bite is likely to happen today.

Ticks are small, their bites are usually painless, and symptoms may not appear immediately. Someone may understand the risk while still believing that an individual walk, gardening session, or afternoon in the yard is unlikely to result in exposure.

Prevention also requires repetition. Repellent must be applied, clothing must be selected or treated, tick checks must be performed, and properties must be maintained throughout tick season. Knowing what to do is different from incorporating those steps into a daily routine.

What Did the New England Tick-Prevention Study Find?

Researchers surveyed 4,855 households across Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont during 2023 and 2024.

The survey, called Project ITCH—“Is Tick Control Helping?”—examined attitudes and practices related to ticks, mosquitoes, and residential vector control. Participants were asked about their concerns, outdoor activities, housing and property characteristics, personal protective practices, and measures taken around their homes.

The residential interventions examined included:

  • Removing vegetation and leaf litter
  • Eliminating standing water
  • Using commercial pesticide applications
  • Installing deer fencing
  • Using tick tubes
  • Using rodent-targeted bait boxes

The researchers also examined personal precautions, including tick checks and treating pets with products intended to kill or repel ticks.

Were People Concerned About Tick-Borne Disease?

Yes. Seventy-eight percent of respondents strongly agreed that they were concerned about tick-borne disease, while 49% strongly agreed that ticks were a major problem around their homes.

Furthermore, 44% reported that someone in their household had previously been diagnosed with a tick-borne disease. This was a population with substantial awareness and, in many cases, personal experience with these infections.

Most households were taking at least some action. Eighty-eight percent reported using at least one residential vector-control intervention in 2023, increasing to 93% in 2024.

The prevention gap was therefore not simply a matter of people doing nothing. The important finding was that general concern did not reliably predict how many preventive measures a household used.

Does Seeing Ticks Around the Home Make People More Likely to Act?

It appears so. After adjustment for age, income, yard size, gender, state of residence, and other factors, general concern about tick-borne disease was not associated with using more residential vector-control interventions.

By contrast, respondents who strongly agreed that ticks were a significant problem around their homes used approximately 9% more interventions than people who did not perceive ticks as an immediate problem.

This distinction is important. General awareness may feel distant, while seeing ticks on the property, on a pet, or near family members creates a more immediate reason to act.

Why Do People Skip Tick-Prevention Measures?

The study was not designed to identify every reason people failed to act. However, its findings highlight several practical barriers.

Are some prevention measures too expensive or difficult?

Some measures are easier and less expensive than others. Removing leaf litter from frequently used areas may be relatively straightforward. Professional yard treatments, deer fencing, tick tubes, and rodent-targeted bait boxes may involve greater cost, effort, maintenance, or uncertainty.

Fewer than 20% of participating households reported using deer fencing, tick tubes, or rodent bait boxes. People may be concerned about Lyme disease while remaining unsure which products are effective, appropriate, or affordable for their property.

Is it difficult to remember tick precautions every day?

Yes. Many preventive practices are not one-time decisions. Repellent must be available and applied correctly, tick checks must be repeated, and property maintenance must continue throughout the season.

Most personal protective practices in the survey were reportedly used only “sometimes.” Tick checks and treating pets with tick-control products were notable exceptions that many households performed more consistently.

Do people know which prevention method matters most?

Not always. Residential tick-control options differ in cost, feasibility, environmental impact, and evidence of effectiveness. A prevention measure that is practical for one property may not be appropriate for another.

A previous diagnosis may make the risk feel more immediate. However, even personal experience did not produce a dramatic increase in preventive behavior.

This reinforces the study’s central finding: concern, knowledge, and experience do not automatically result in comprehensive or consistent prevention.

Are People More Motivated to Protect Their Families?

One of the study’s most useful findings involved motivation. Households that identified protecting family members as their primary reason for vector control used approximately 11% more interventions than households motivated primarily by protecting their own health.

Prevention messages may therefore be more effective when they emphasize protecting children, other family members, and pets rather than presenting tick prevention only as an individual responsibility.

Children may spend substantial time playing near grass, brush, stone walls, and wooded property edges. Parents and caregivers can help establish routines involving outdoor clothing, repellents, bathing, and tick checks.

Do People in Every State Use the Same Prevention Measures?

No. The survey found regional differences across New England.

Residents of Maine and Vermont reported approximately 11% fewer residential vector-control interventions than Massachusetts residents after adjustment for income, yard size, concern, and other factors.

When the three northern New England states were considered together, residents used approximately 10% fewer interventions than residents of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

The researchers proposed several possible explanations, including differences in access to information or services, the more recent expansion of tick populations into northern areas, and property characteristics that make certain interventions less practical.

A strategy suitable for a small suburban property in Connecticut may not be practical for a large wooded property in rural Maine. Recommendations should account for these differences rather than assuming that one approach will work for every household.

How Can I Make Tick Prevention Easier to Remember?

The most sustainable plan is usually one that fits naturally into existing routines. Prevention messages should move beyond telling people that ticks are dangerous and make the recommended actions specific and manageable.

Practical approaches may include:

  • Keeping repellent near the door or with outdoor equipment
  • Keeping fine-tipped tweezers in an accessible location
  • Making tick checks part of the routine after outdoor activity
  • Showering after returning indoors
  • Checking children and pets carefully
  • Removing leaf litter near lawns and frequently used areas
  • Reducing dense vegetation near play areas, patios, and walkways
  • Creating barriers between lawns and wooded edges when practical
  • Discussing property-specific options with qualified local professionals
  • Adapting precautions to local tick activity and property type

These measures cannot eliminate every tick bite. However, they may reduce exposure when they are used consistently and combined appropriately.

Can Yard Treatments Completely Prevent Lyme Disease?

No. No residential intervention can completely eliminate the risk of a tick bite or Lyme disease.

Tick exposure can occur away from home, and ticks may be transported by wildlife, pets, or people. The effectiveness and practicality of property treatments also vary according to the landscape and intervention used.

A more realistic strategy combines personal protection, pet protection, property management, prompt tick removal, and awareness of early symptoms.

What Were the Study’s Limitations?

The results should not be interpreted as representing every household in New England or the United States. Survey participation was voluntary, and people already concerned about vector-borne disease may have been more likely to respond.

The participants were predominantly female, White, highly educated, and from households with incomes above the New England median. A substantial percentage also reported a household history of tick-borne disease.

The study was cross-sectional and relied on self-reported behavior. It identified associations but could not prove that particular concerns or motivations caused people to adopt preventive measures.

The study also counted the number of interventions rather than determining whether each household had selected the most effective measures for its circumstances.

Nevertheless, the large regional survey highlights an important public-health challenge: providing information about Lyme disease is necessary, but information alone may not produce consistent action.
