Breast Cancer Survivor Later Diagnosed With Lyme Disease

Hello, and welcome to another Inside Lyme Podcast. I am your host Dr. Daniel Cameron. In this episode, I discuss the case of a 61-year-old woman who was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and later developed Lyme disease.

Key Point: Persistent pain after cancer treatment can have many causes. In some cases, Lyme disease may be part of the differential diagnosis.

This case involved a 61-year-old woman who was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer and underwent a lumpectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

I first read about this case in the journal Diagnostics by Ørbæk and colleagues.

One year later, the woman developed severe leg and back pain. The pain became so intense that narcotics did not relieve her symptoms.

Her doctors evaluated her for a recurrence of breast cancer, but no evidence of cancer was found.

Eventually, she was diagnosed with Lyme disease and treated accordingly.

This case highlights how symptoms appearing after cancer treatment may have causes unrelated to cancer recurrence, including infections such as Lyme disease.

You can hear more about these cases through my blogs, social media, and YouTube channel. Sign up for our newsletter to keep up with these cases.
