There are a number of diagnoses that are similar to Lyme disease. For example, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia are very similar. So, if you are told you have fibromyalgia, you may be prescribed an antidepressant or a drug to treat the pain, like Lyrica. If the doctor comes to the conclusion that you have chronic fatigue, he/she may suggest an alternative medicine. But if you have a tick-borne illness the doctor may not recognize it and can miss the opportunity to prescribe an antibiotic that will fight the infection. So, I always recommend that as part of any evaluation a physician consider that a tick-borne illness could be a factor.
