Celebrities with Lyme Disease: What Their Stories Reveal About Symptoms and Misdiagnosis
Which singers have battled Lyme disease? Several high-profile artists—including Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, Shania Twain, Daryl Hall, and Kris Kristofferson—have publicly shared their experiences.
Celebrities with Lyme disease have helped bring attention to how serious—and often misunderstood—this illness can be.
Quick Answer: Avril Lavigne, Justin Bieber, Shania Twain, Daryl Hall, and Kris Kristofferson have all battled Lyme disease, each experiencing different symptoms ranging from fatigue and neurologic issues to vocal cord damage.
Lyme disease does not discriminate. These cases highlight how the illness can affect even well-known performers, often leading to delayed diagnosis, serious complications, and prolonged recovery.
What these stories reveal is a broader clinical pattern: symptoms are often misinterpreted, testing may be inconclusive, and diagnosis is frequently delayed—issues that affect not only celebrities, but patients everywhere.
Learn more about Lyme disease symptoms and how this condition presents beyond celebrity cases.
Avril Lavigne: Bedridden and Fighting for Recovery
Well-known singer Avril Lavigne’s battle with Lyme disease began in 2014, after months of unexplained flu-like symptoms and fatigue.
At first, she did not know what was wrong. She saw multiple doctors and underwent numerous tests, but her condition continued to worsen until she was completely bedridden.
At the height of her illness, Avril was so weak she could barely move, walk, or speak. She described feeling like she was “underwater, drowning,” while struggling to find physicians who understood the complexity of her symptoms.
The experience led to a multi-year hiatus from music, during which Avril focused on recovery and advocacy.
In 2019, she released Head Above Water, an album inspired by her experience with Lyme disease. Through her foundation and public interviews, she has continued to raise awareness about delayed diagnosis and the challenges many patients face seeking treatment.
Daryl Hall: A Long Battle with Chronic Lyme
Daryl Hall has spoken candidly about years of unexplained symptoms—including fatigue, brain fog, and neurologic complaints—that affected his ability to perform.
Eventually diagnosed with Lyme disease, he has used interviews to highlight how symptoms were overlooked and how difficult it can be for some patients to obtain appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
His experience reflects a broader pattern seen in many patients with persistent Lyme symptoms.
Justin Bieber: Publicly Sharing His Diagnosis
In 2020, Justin Bieber revealed that he had been battling Lyme disease for years.
His symptoms—including fatigue, brain fog, skin issues, and declining energy—had reportedly been misunderstood or misdiagnosed before he publicly discussed the illness.
He stepped away from touring during his illness and later returned after treatment, using his platform to increase awareness and reduce stigma around Lyme disease.
Bieber also discussed concurrent Epstein-Barr virus infection, highlighting how overlapping conditions may complicate recovery in some patients.
Kris Kristofferson: Misdiagnosed with Alzheimer’s
Kris Kristofferson experienced memory loss and confusion severe enough that he was initially believed to have Alzheimer’s disease.
The true cause was later identified as Lyme disease.
After treatment, his cognitive function improved significantly. The fog that had clouded his thinking began to lift, demonstrating how Lyme disease can sometimes mimic serious neurologic conditions.
His case remains one of the clearest public examples of Lyme disease presenting with dementia-like symptoms.
Shania Twain: Overcoming Vocal Cord Damage
Shania Twain developed Lyme disease after a tick bite while on tour. She later described experiencing dizziness, blackouts, and progressive vocal difficulties.
Her illness eventually led to dysphonia, a disorder affecting vocal cord control and voice production.
The condition significantly affected her ability to sing and perform. After surgery and extensive therapy, she ultimately returned to recording and live performance—though with lasting changes to her voice.
Her experience highlights how Lyme disease may affect cranial nerves, neurologic pathways, and vocal function. For more on this pattern, see Lyme disease and vocal cord paralysis.

Celine Dionne. Like Justin, received a rare neurological diagnosis, following “treatment “. In Canada, it’s never Lyme, after 21 days of doxycycline, if you’re lucky enough to test positive on both the doomed ELISA and Western Blot. We never hear what tick borne diseases these famous singers had nor where they went for treatment, and at what cost.
Personally, despite a bullseye rash, high risk outdoor activities in 1995, and all of the classic symptoms, I was denied a diagnosis because “there’s no Lyme in Ottawa”. Eventually diagnosed in the US in 2018 and continue treatment. Recently was hospitalized for Lyme related neurological symptoms including blackouts (no memory before) and was told we don’t know anything about Lyme, (and refused to speak with my US LLMD ) but after a month in hospital, was diagnosed with, you guessed it, a rare neurological disorder that would result in my death in five years. “No cure”.
In Canada, so many doctors have lost their licenses due to trying to follow ILADS guidelines, that literally no one will touch you, unless you can afford a ND trained by ILADS.
I find that by taking a shower after being out in the woods air working in the yard I can go over my entire body with my finger tips. In doing this I can feel a little bump on my skin that I didn’t notice before. That bump more often than not has been a tick, sometimes as small as a pinhead.
The fingertips are super sensitive and our memory of our skin surface can help find ticks after being outdoors.
Another reason to always take a shower after being outdoors.
