Lyme disease caused by Borrelia mayonii

In 2016, researchers from Mayo Clinic, in collaboration with the CDC and health officials from Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin discovered a new bacterial species (Borrelia mayonii) that causes Lyme disease. Previously, Borrelia burgdorferi was the only bacterium believed to cause Lyme disease. [1]

Lyme disease causes cardiac complications

In their article, “Lyme carditis–induced sinoatrial dysfunction after initiation of targeted oral antibiotic therapy: A case report,” Chen and colleagues describe a case in which Lyme carditis triggered sinoatrial node dysfunction that manifest more than 1 week after antibiotic treatment. [1]
